These Rockrooster Walland boots have great potential. I have sworn by German-made Lowa boots I wore in 2017 on the final 1950-miles of the Appalachian Trail. (Vasque St. Elias boots were discarded after the first 240-miles; I swapped the regular Lowa for a waterproof pair for wear in wet, muddy Vermont.) The first pair of Lowa is finally wearing out – the sole is gradually leaving the upper. I wanted a new pair of boots for day hiking in Utah in June, 2021. For just a couple of days of hiking out west, I balked at the cost of new Lowa and sensed the Walland were a viable alternative. After deliberating for a couple of days, I ordered the Walland based upon reviews that indicated they were narrow, and comfortable out of the box notwithstanding a remark that the inserts might have to be replaced. (I have a dozen sets of various inserts left over from the AT hike so I know the drill.) I hesitated briefly when it was noted that a 2nd pair of laces were included because I figured that the speed-lace grommets on the Walland might be a problem. (The laces for both pair of my Lowa never wore out on either the standard hook-lace or the speed- lace.) When the Walland arrived, I put them on and immediately concluded that the reviews were correct. First, the boots are appropriately narrow so my foot does not slide in them when walking on inclines. Second, they were especially comfortable – which is not an easy statement to make since the fat pads on the soles of my feet wore out on the AT and my feet beg for soft insoles in any footwear. (Walking barefoot is painful.) The insert might not be suitable for hiking with a heavy pack - but they likely are just fine for day hikes. Third, the boots have a superb cushion in the heel (not a strong aspect in the Lowa) that will dramatically reduce knee stain while hiking downhill on rough terrain. On the other hand, the speed-lace grommets are not speedy; although they might need to a break-in period. Additionally, the Walland are 4-ounces heavier than the Lowa (with well-worn tread) which for hiking the AT might have been a discriminator. Four extra ounces when lifted an average of 40,000 times a day on the AT adds up to a lot of extra weight. However, the heel cushioning in the Walland might have zeroed-out the weight difference. Three aspects of the Walland can’t be properly measured yet: tread wear, toe cap wear in rocky terrain and the speed-lace grommets. For now I am delighted with the style, color, function and comfort of the boots. When you first put these boots on they felt abit strange. Wasnt used to all the cushion under/around my feet. If you follow the size chart, they are right on the money. They seem to be waterproof. They are not a real heavy boot, which is nice. The workmanship of the boots appear good. I am still breaking them in and havent worn them daily. There is alittle discomfort in the right boot, that rubs on the top of my foot-from a raised seam near the shoe string eyelet. Hoping this goes away. Great warranty on these boots! Keep your feet toasty warm without sweating. The boot was a little more than I expected for the price. An outfitter would probably charge $125 to $150 for a comparable product. I have better boots but this is fine for easy to moderate hikes and seems well built. Time will tell.SHOULD BE WIDER EEPurchased these after years of only using Keens for everyday work boots, they have been getting worse with every purchase. Keens do not last longer than 3 months and are not waterproof like they used to be. Yes, they claim to be but are not. Decided to try a new brand... These shoes look great and fit great, but sadly are not waterproof like they claim to be. We are going to try spraying some waterproofing stuff on them and maybe that will help. Not sure how they will hold up yet, only used them for about two weeks so far.A little narrow and tight but warmLove this boot! Fits like a glove. Will definitely buy again. I bought many boots over the years and they wear out so fast. I use them in my Landscaping business. This is a must have.Comfortable and well fitting. Seems to have an extra padding making a higher arch support. You will feel it at first but not bothersome. It add protection. It fit my narrow size 12 feet perfectly. Not for wide feet. The insole is very good, and I was hiking right away. Always slack off the top for new boots. As well, I always put in stretch laces, since i'm old enough to hate tying by boots all the time.
